about

"The dirty truth about our freedoms is this: They conflict. We can't have all of them simultaneously. Each of us, individually and as a collective, relies for our freedoms on the actions of others. The existence of a freedom implies a reciprocal obligation on everyone to respect that freedom, and this holds generally, which imposes fairly sharp limits on the sorts of 'freedom' that are achievable. If you're serious about freedom, this isn't something you can brush aside.

But the most vocal proponents of 'freedom' in the western capitalist ethic do precisely that. Right-leaning libertarians aren't talking about universal, maximal freedom. They're not taking a realistic, practical approach to freedom. They're talking specifically about freedom from constraint by government action, and they very much have the unlimited profit-seeking of corporations firmly in mind when they advance their cause of 'freedom'. That's the link joining freedom and the economy, for these people.

This, it can not be emphasised enough, is not freedom. It's the liberty of tyrants, the freedom of those with power to exercise it unconstrained by the interests of the powerless. Freedom unmoored from reciprocal obligation, an unbalanced 'freedom' to exploit and be exploited, a freedom that very much comes at a price, usually expressed in US dollars.

If you want freedom, it's not about removing all the rules. It's about having rules, and ways of generating rules, that maximise freedom."
